BorgWarner's 31-03 eGearDrive™ transmission will propel the 2011 Transit Connect Electric, Ford's first all-electric production vehicle based on the global Transit Connect, the 2010 North American Truck of the Year. Targeted at urban delivery fleets, the all-electric commercial van will reach a top speed of 75 miles per hour and offers a range of up to 80 miles on a full charge. Ford's Transit Connect will be upfitted to an all-electric model by Azure Dynamics, which will install its electric propulsion system driving the front wheels through BorgWarner's eGearDrive™ single-speed transmission. Adapted in collaboration with Azure Dynamics, the eGearDrive™ transmission delivers high torque capacity, high efficiency, and low noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) in a compact package.

Our company owns five tc ev's, just had our first failure. They have been in service for almost one year, this van is used in the city with 1,500 miles on it. Driver noticed a clanking, banging, grinding noise from the front. Since this vehicle no longer has a warranty due to the bankruptcy that was filed by azure I am stuck with doing the repairs on these vehicles at our companies expense. What I found after removal and tear down of the gear drive is the role pin that holds the differential gear pin in broke. This allows the diff gear pin to slide out and contact the teeth on the center gear in this gear housing. The teeth are broken, the bearings are contaminated with ground up metal. Looks like its time for another gear box. Wonder how long the other ones will last.
A quick update, ford did nothing for us. They claim they couldn't even get us the parts to repair the van. We contacted borgwarner, they were great. Sent them the broken gear box and they sent us a new one at no charge to us! Got the van back on the road. Thanks you borgwarner for standing behind your products unlike ford.
